As I was holding my cat the other day, I thought about all of the wonderful things I have prepared for him in our new home in Florida. He’ll meet my mom (who has three cats of her own), he’ll have a bigger house to explore, a safe patio with sunshine and fresh air, and windows galore to look out of. His future is full of blessings!
But to get there, he must endure a long and uncomfortable journey—20 hours in the car over 2 ½ days, strange hotel rooms, noises, and stress. From his perspective, he may only feel fear, confusion, and discomfort. Yet I know what awaits him on the other side.
This made me realize: isn’t that how our journey with God feels at times?
Just as I have planned good things for my cat, our Heavenly Father has already prepared the best for us. He sees the end from the beginning, and His heart is full of anticipation for what is ahead.
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11, NIV)
We may not see it, but God has already mapped out a future that is far better than we can imagine.
My cat won’t understand why the trip feels so hard, but every mile brings him closer to joy. In the same way, we often struggle to see the purpose in trials, hardships, and detours.
“In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33, NIV)
“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.” (James 1:2–3, NIV)
The difficulties aren’t the end; they are part of the road that leads us to God’s promises.
If my cat fights me during the trip, he only makes himself more anxious. If he rests in my care, the journey will still be long—but it will be easier because he is safe in my hands.
We are the same with God. When we try to control the outcome, we increase our worry. When we surrender to Him, we find peace even in the middle of the storm.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:5–6, NIV)
Surrender doesn’t mean the road won’t be bumpy—it means we’re not driving anymore. God is.
I know the joy that awaits my cat in his new home, and that helps me stay patient as I care for him on the road. God also knows the joy that awaits us, and He provides glimpses of His provision and care along the way to remind us.
“What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived—the things God has prepared for those who love him.” (1 Corinthians 2:9, NIV)
The journey is temporary. The destination is eternal.
Just as I long to see my cat happy in his new home, God longs to see us step into the fullness of His good plans. He delights in blessing His children. Though the path may feel uncertain, uncomfortable, or long, we can endure with confidence, knowing our Father has something beautiful prepared for us.
Let’s choose to trust Him—not only for the destination but also through the journey.
Where in your life do you feel “stuck in the car ride”—anxious, impatient, or weary?
What does it mean for you, practically, to surrender your plans to God today?
How has God shown you “glimpses” of His provision along your journey?
